English-Czech contrastive study of the lexical bundle "hell of a"

Abstract

The BA thesis examines the lexical bundle hell of a, and its Czech translational counterparts. The lexical bundle hell of a is a noun phrase and it can express different meanings depending on the type of construction it appears in. It is typically a part of an appositional construction with another noun (a hell of a problem), which features characteristic asymmetry of syntactico- semantic relations, because while the first noun hell is the syntactic head, the second noun problem is the semantic head, as it is modified by the first noun hell (Dušková, 2009: 13. 61. 3); the bundle is ascribing characteristics traditionally associated with hell to the following noun; the speaker thus expresses a similar modification as the one provided by the adjective hellish (ten Wolde, 2022: 298). The bundle can also be used to express an extremely positive or an extremely negative evaluation (one hell of a chess player), the lexical meaning of hell is bleached and hell of a portrayals a mere extreme here (ten Wolde, 2023: 82). Bakalářská práce se zabývá lexikálním spojením hell of a, a jeho českými překladovými protějšky. Spojení hell of a je substantivní fráze, která může mít v angličtině několik různých významů podle typu konstrukce, ve které se nachází. Vyskytuje se typicky v apozičním spojení s jiným substantivem (hell of a problem), pro které je příznačná asymetrie syntakticko- sémantických vztahů, protože zatímco první substantivum hell představuje syntaktickou hlavu fráze, druhé podstatné jméno problem je hlavou sémantickou, jelikož ho modifikuje první podstatné jméno hell (Dušková, 2009: 13. 61. 3); výraz zde přiděluje vlastnosti tradičně asociované s peklem následujícímu substantivu; mluvčí tímto způsobem vyjadřuje podobnou evaluaci jako použitím adjektiva hellish (ten Wolde, 2022: 298). Spojení může být ale také užito k vyjádření extrémně pozitivního nebo extrémně negativního hodnocení (one hell of a chess player), lexikální význam hell je zde oslaben a hell of a vyjadřuje pouze extrém (ten Wolde, 2023: 82). Dále může hell of a plnit funkci intenzifikátoru, kde spojení určuje už jen skalární míru (a hell of a good bull dog), podobně jako adjektivum very (ten Wolde, 2022: 299).
