Abstract

This bachelor thesis focuses on the concept of reification within sociological theory and social philosophy, emphasizing the expansion and supplementation of György Lukács' classical conception through Pierre Bourdieu's theory. The thesis analyzes Marx's theory of exchange value and commodity fetishism, which serves primarily to understand Lukács' conceptualization of reification. While the interpretation of Marx's and Lukács's theories is situated in the context of their work, Pierre Bourdieu's theory is interpreted to overcome the limitations of Lukács's concept and to broaden the view of the processes of reification and commodity fetishism. In order to achieve this goal, the thesis also deals with a detailed analysis of Pierre Bourdieu's theory itself. The primary objective of the thesis is to explain how Bourdieu's sociological theory of fields and action can enrich and expand Lukács' theory of reification by incorporating the plurality of social reality and explaining the mechanisms of its reproduction. The thesis is based on an analysis of primary and secondary sources and contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of reification and the structural processes influencing social reality.
