According to French philosopher Jean Baudrillard, experienced reality is replaced by simulation, mediated through accumulated signs. Baudrillard argues that, in the contemporary world of late capitalism, dominated by proliferating media and technology, images have become the source of our experienced reality. Such signs have replaced authentic, lived experience. Film and other forms of mass media create simulated world through copies without an original, which in turn influence human perception. The constant reproduction of images and signs is caused by the necessity of human communication, representation and eventually simulation. This process leads to the loss of unified meaning and origin. The circulation of signs referring only to other signifiers, results in the complete inability to represent or perceive reality outside of such media, particularly images, thereby creating hyperreality. Baudrillard defines hyperreality as a state in which the image dominates. Reality is formed according to the image, rather than vice versa, the image being the reflection of reality. The clear distinction and meaning of signs disappear and reality itself becomes ambivalent. Barbie, with its global reach, self-reflexive character and nostalgic charisma manages to upend not only the on-screen reality, but also...
