Ostrovy lidství. Robert Burton a problém funkce utopie v raně novověkém myšlení

Abstract

This dissertation explores the role and function of utopia in early modern thought. In its first part, it develops a research strategy based on a historical-conceptual analysis of the term utopia and a critical reflection on existing approaches within utopian studies. This strategy is grounded in the assumption that utopia is best understood through the functions it fulfils. On this basis, the dissertation formulates a preliminary definition of the so-called classical utopia and identifies four fundamental functions attributed to it. The second part examines these theoretical conclusions through a case study of Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, which is understood as a representative work of the early modern utopian tradition. The analysis combines close textual interpretation with a reflection on the broader historical and intellectual context in which the text emerged. It draws on literary-comparative analysis, contextual reading, hermeneutic approach, and a philosophical-anthropological perspective as its main interpretive frameworks. It examines how Burton engages with the utopian genre, which functions his utopia fulfils, and how these relate to his conceptions of a melancholic world, human nature, human condition, social organization, and the possibilities of their reform. Disertační práce zkoumá roli a funkci utopie v rámci raně novověkého myšlení. V první části práce je prostřednictvím historicko-konceptuální analýzy a kritické reflexe dosavadních přístupů v rámci utopických studií navržena výzkumná strategie, která pojímá utopii primárně skrze funkce, jež plní. Na tomto základě je formulována předběžná definice tzv. klasické, tedy raně novověké utopie a určeny čtyři základní funkce, které plní. Druhá část práce tyto teoretické závěry ověřuje a ilustruje prostřednictvím případové studie díla Anatomie melancholie Roberta Burtona, které je nahlíženo jako ukázkové dílo raně novověké utopické tradice. Analýza spojuje výklad samotného textu s reflexí širšího historického a intelektuálního kontextu jeho vzniku a opírá se přitom o literárně-komparativní analýzu, dále kontextuální čtení, hermeneutický přístup a filozoficko-antropologickou perspektivu jako o hlavní interpretační rámce. Sleduje způsob, jakým Burton s utopickým žánrem pracuje, jaké funkce jeho utopie naplňuje a jak souvisí s jeho pojetím melancholického světa, lidské přirozenosti, lidského stavu, společenského uspořádání a možností jejich nápravy.
