English Equivalents of the Czech Aspectual Adverbial dál(e): Expressing Continuity in English

Abstract

The thesis at hand focuses on comparing the category of verbal aspect between Czech and English on corpus-based data. The theoretical section summarizes the current debate on verbal aspect, defining it and distancing it from other linguistic concepts. Mainly, the four means of conveying aspect, according to Mortier's 2007 dissertation are dissected in detail. Further, the Czech category of 'vid' is presented as a means of comparison with English. The analytical part consists of applying what has been presented in the theoretical section onto corpus data. The Czech aspectual adverbial 'dál' is translated via corpus data into English, and the viable equivalents are compared to Mortier's four means of conveying aspect, and whether those four types are prevalent among the equivalents. The English equivalents are also to be analysed based on the possible correlation between telicity and form. Tato práce se zaměřuje na porovnávání kategorie slovesného aspektu v češtině a angličtině na základě korpusových dat. Teoretická část shrne současnou debatu na téma slovesného aspektu, jeho definicí a vymezením jej od jiných lingvistických konceptů. Valnou část teoretické části tvoří detailní popis čtyřech způsobů vyjádření aspektu podle disertační práce L. Mortier z roku 2007. Dále se teoretická část také věnuje české kategorii slovesného vidu v porovnání s angličtinou. Analytická část využívá teorie představené v prví části práce na korpusových datech. České aspektuální adverbiále ,dál' je pomocí korpusových dat přeloženo do angličtiny, a použitelné ekvivalenty jsou porovnány se čtyřmi způsoby vyjádření aspektu podle Mortier, a také zda tyto způsoby mezi ekvivalenty převládají. Anglické ekvivalenty také budou analyzovány na základě možného vztahu mezi slovesnou telicitou a jejich formou.
