Hypothesis on project pursuit behavior: does it help explain cross-country differences in project realization rates?

Abstract

The Structure of Action This thesis uses decision theory to attribute the limitation faced by actors in obtaining common and individual purposes to the selection of actions and the way in which these are carried out. A major emphasis is given to the way in which actors execute the selected actions. This will be called "the structure of action", and it measures actions in terms of applied performance and precaution. As for the selection of actions, it is represented by the preferences for commitment, which is described as the voluntary restriction of the choice set. The purpose of presenting this analysis is to demonstrate how actions directed towards the achievement of a purpose, which is subject to interactions with other agents, may in turn create suboptimal interactions and even obliterate them when there is an incoherence between the intention and actions. This argument takes on greater relevance when considering three essential suppositions: (1) the incoherence between action and intention may generate unexpected and/or unintended outcomes; (2) the coordination costs incurred in establishing the interactions and/or rearranging these suboptimal interactions, and (3) the characteristic factors of each society and their potential to shape an average structure of action in a society. Gonzalez Abstrakt Předkládám hypotézu o tom, zda existují rozdíly mezi zeměmi v tom, jak jednotlivci usilují o realizaci projektů, a pokud ano, zamýšlím se nad tím, zda lze tyto rozdíly v míře realizace projektů vysvětlit pomocí této hypotézy. Hlavním předmětem zájmu jsou sice podnikatelské projekty, ale má hypotéza je zobecnitelná na jakýkoli projekt, který se realizuje individuálně nebo kolektivně. Proto předkládám kvalitativní popis chování při realizaci projektů s využitím právně-ekonomického konceptu "péče", konceptu "plnění" z teorie smluv a pojmu "mezičasové volby" z ekonomické teorie. Tento přístup mi umožňuje určit proxy proměnné pro chování při realizaci projektů a provést popisnou analýzu s využitím individuálních dat z iniciativy Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). V práci si kladu dva cíle: 1) zdůvodnit, že mnou předložená výzkumná otázka je teoreticky opodstatněná a 2) navrhnout behaviorální interpretaci realizace podnikatelských projektů, která vychází z ekonomické teorie a dat o podnikání.
