Stylistic and Linguistic Analysis of Zahīr ad-Dīn Muḥammad Bābur's Poetry: Authenticity and Cultural Context in Turkic-Persian Literature

Abstract

This work examines formal and stylistic features of Zahīr al-Dīn Muḥammad Bābur's (1483-1530) poetic compositions on one hand, and the Turkic-Persian works of his coevals on the other. The focus is to emphasise the original works by the author as well as on outlining key features of the general Turkic-Persian poetry composed between the fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries. A particular attention is paid to such questions as the authenticity of poems and the qualities of chaghatay compared to the classical turkī and sartī and whether the poetry of this period should be considered as declining as claimed by a group of academics or how the research outputs contribute into the analysis of other historical works. The research also contributes into the matters of chronology of poems and manuscripts compilation. The study aims to examine the authenticity of the lyrical compositions attributed to Bābur through detailed linguistic and stylistic analysis systematically compared with his well- documented works. By carefully compiling a reference corpus of Bābur's recognized works, including his famous Bāburnāma and his letters, we establish a fundamental understanding of his language patterns, vocabulary preferences and his distinctive poetic style. Tato práce zkoumá formální a stylistické rysy básnických skladeb Zahīr al-Dīn Muḥammad Bābura (1483-1530) na jedné straně a turkicko-perských děl jeho vrstevníků na straně druhé. Důraz je kladen na původní autorova díla a na nastínění klíčových rysů obecné turkicko-perské poezie komponované mezi 15. a 16. stoletím. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována otázkám jako je autenticita básní a vlastnosti čagatajštiny ve srovnání s klasickým turkī a sartī, a zda by měla být poezie tohoto období považována za pokleslou, jak tvrdí skupina akademiků, nebo jak k tomu přispívají výsledky výzkumu k analýze jiných historických děl. Výzkum rovněž přispívá k otázkám chronologie básní a kompilace rukopisů. Studium si klade za cíl prozkoumat autenticitu lyrických skladeb připisovaných Bāburovi prostřednictvím podrobné lingvistické a stylistické analýzy ve srovnání s jeho dobře zdokumentovanými díly. Pečlivým sestavením referenčního korpusu Bāburových uznávaných děl, včetně jeho slavné Bāburnāmy a jeho dopisů, jsme vytvořili základní porozumění jeho jazykovým vzorcům, preferencím slovní zásoby a jeho osobitému poetickému stylu.
