The Rh blood group system is one of the most significant polymorphic systems in the human population, with RhD being its main antigen. Although RhD-negativity is associated with the risk of hemolytic disease of the newborn, its relatively high frequency in the European population (15%) suggests the existence of potential evolutionary advantages. The heterozygote advantage hypothesis proposes that RhD heterozygotes may be more resilient to certain environmental and pathogenic stressors, including Toxoplasma gondii infection. This thesis primarily focuses on analyzing differences between RhD heterozygotes and both homozygote groups, particularly in relation to genotype effects on health and performance. Using RHD genotyping, three genotype groups were identified and further analyzed in relation to cognitive functions and both physical and mental health. Special attention was given to the impact of Toxoplasma gondii infection, which was found to be a significant health modifier, especially in RhD-negative individuals. The results support the hypothesis of a potential biological advantage of RhD heterozygotes, who show resistance to infectious burden. Furthermore, sex-specific differences in the effects of RhD genotype on health and performance were observed, which may have implications for the...
