Komentovaný překlad vybraných částí románu Josepha Boydena Three Day Road (2nd ed. London: Phoenix, 2006) s úvodní studií o autorovi, jeho stylu, české recepci a překladatelských problémech

Abstract

This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part contains an introductory study about the life and work of Canadian author Joseph Boyden. It also includes a detailed analysis of his novel Three Day Road (2005), which becomes the subject of the second part of this thesis covering the translation of selected parts from the novel. The analysis examines the novel on a literary and stylistic level and summarizes relevant historical context the book draws from. The translation focuses on four chapters from the beginning of the novel and is accompanied by a commentary which forms the third part of this thesis. The commentary discusses the particular translation problems present in the text, including, e.g., the transcription of Cree expressions, military terminology, and historical and cultural references within the context of Canada and First Nations. Diplomová práce se skládá ze tří částí. První část se zabývá úvodní studií o životě a díle kanadského autora Josepha Boydena. Tato část práce obsahuje i podrobný rozbor jeho románu Three Day Road (2005), který je předmětem druhé části této práce, již tvoří překlad vybraných úseků z románu. Analýza se dotýká literární i stylistické roviny a shrnuje důležitý historický kontext, ze kterého kniha vychází. Překládány byly čtyři kapitoly ze začátku knihy. Překlad je doplněn komentářem, který tvoří třetí část této práce. V komentáři jsou rozebrány konkrétní překladatelské problémy daného textu, včetně např. transkripce kríjštiny, vojenská terminologie, a historicko-kulturních reálií z prostředí Kanady a prvních národů.
