Gaučo a jeho svět v povídkách Jorgeho Luise Borgese

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to present gauchesque literature and to analyse the figure of the gaucho and his world in the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges. The main objective of this work is therefore to demonstrate how Borges approaches and reinterprets this traditional character of Argentine literature in his short stories. The first part of the thesis introduces gauchesque literature and the short story genre. This is followed by an exploration of Borges's relationship with Argentine tradition and gauchesque themes. The core of the work consists of an analysis of the gaucho figure and its attributes in short stories such as The End (El fin), The South (El Sur), The Dead Man (El muerto), and The Biography of Tadeo Isidoro Cruz (Biografía de Tadeo Isidoro Cruz). Based on the analysis of these stories, the image of the gaucho as presented by Borges is outlined-a gaucho who merges traditional Argentine themes with universal philosophical questions. Unlike his predecessors, Borges does not idealise the gaucho but presents him as a symbol of courage and honour.

Cílem této diplomové práce je představit gaučovskou literaturu a provést analýzu postavy gauča a jeho světa v povídkách od Jorgeho Luise Borgese. Tato práce si proto klade za cíl ukázat, jakým způsobem Borges tuto tradiční postavu argentinské literatury zpracovává ve svých povídkách. První část práce představuje gaučovskou literaturu a povídkový žánr. Poté ukazujeme Borgesův vztah k argentinské tradici a ke gaučovské tematice. Následuje analýza postavy gauča a jeho atributů v povídkách jako je například Konec (El fin), Jih (El Sur) Mrtvý muž (El muerto) nebo Životopis Tadea Isidora Cruze (Biografía de Tadeo Isidoro Cruz). Na základě analýzy povídek je představen gaučo v Borgesově podání, který propojuje tradiční argentinská témata s univerzálními filozofickými otázkami. Na rozdíl od svých předchůdců Borges gauča neidealizuje, ale představuje ho jako symbol odvahy a cti.
