Abstract

This diploma thesis examines one of the most serious criminal cases in the Czech Republic-the series of murders committed by the couple Jaroslav and Dana Stodola between 2001 and 2003. It offers a previously neglected perspective: the testimonies of key investigators, whose personal accounts reflect not only professional decisions but also the media pressure and institutional responses that blamed local law-enforcement agencies for failing to identify the serial killers earlier. The study combines an oral history approach with both qualitative and quantitative content analysis of a corpus of print media covering the case from 2001 to 2024. In-depth interviews with the lead detective and two public prosecutors reconstruct the investigative atmosphere, analyse the impact of public and media scrutiny, and outline systemic failures within the security forces. More than twenty years later the participants report no sense of personal failure; they state they would proceed in much the same way today and locate the main errors at the systemic level-poor inter-agency communication, flawed autopsy conclusions and cost-driven limitations on forensic examinations. Feelings of guilt are mitigated by suppressing certain memories, yet all three acknowledge a lasting sense of injustice.
