Entre dos mundos: Análisis sociolingüístico del uso del español en el espanglés en las obras literarias de autores nuyorriqueños

Abstract

This master's thesis aims to analyse how Spanish is used in selected literary works by Nuyorican authors, specifically in the books Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas, When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago and Call Me María by Judith Ortiz Cofer. Methodologically, the thesis combines qualitative textual analysis with a broader discursive examination and subsequent comparison of the use of Spanish among the authors. This approach aims to identify and then interpret patterns of Spanglish use and their cultural significance. The analysis builds on the typological background of P. Auer, who provides the key insights for this thesis on code-switching and communicative situations in multicultural settings. Beyond the analysis itself, the thesis opens up relevant and topical sociolinguistic topics. In particular, it focuses on the phenomenon of Spanglish, its origins, linguistic characteristics and its perception as a tool of cultural identity. Cílem této diplomové práce je analyzovat, jak je španělština využívána ve vybraných literárních dílech autorů nuyorikánské literatury, konkrétně v knihách Down These Mean Streets od Piriho Thomase, When I Was Puerto Rican od Esmeraldy Santiago a Call Me María od Judith Ortiz Cofer. Práce metodologicky kombinuje kvalitativní textovou analýzu se širším diskurzivně zaměřeným zkoumáním a následné porovnání užití španělštiny mezi jednotlivými autory. Tento přístup má za cíl identifikovat a následně interpretovat vzorce používání spanglish a jejich kulturní význam. Analýza staví na základech typologického zázemí P. Auera, který pro tuto práci poskytuje stěžejní poznatky o code-switching a komunikačních situacích v multikulturním prostředí. Práce mimo samotné analýzy otevírá relevantní a aktuální sociolingvistická témata. Zejména se zaměřuje na fenomén spanglish, jeho původ, lingvistické charakteristiky a jeho vnímání coby nástroje kulturní identity. Podstatnou částí práce tvoří i představení socio- kulturního a historického kontextu migrační vlny Portoričanů do USA v průběhu 20. století a dopady této migrace.
