This diploma thesis deals with the Karaite polemical text aimed against Rabbinic Judaism Massah u-Merivah (1838). It is one of the latest writings of Karaite-Rabbanite polemics, authored by Avraham Firkovich, an Eastern European Karaite scholar, manuscript collector, and a forger. In addition to the structure and the argumentative manner of the Masa u-meriva, the thesis also aims to present this text in the context of the Karaite-Rabbanite polemics genre and to analyze in which aspects does Firkovich's anti-rabbinic polemic build on the previous polemical tradition and in which aspects it is on the contrary innovative. With reference to the Jewish Haskalah movement, nationalisms and the search for national identity by the Karaite population of modern Eastern Europe, the thesis will attempt to answer the question of Avraham Firkovich's reasons leading him to compose such a sharp critique of Rabbinic Judaism and to determine what its aim was.
