This thesis explores the historical and linguistic in昀氀uence of the Amorites on the Akkadian- speaking sedentary society of Mesopotamia. It traces their presence from the mid-third millennium BCE and their evolving role, from nomadic groups on the fringes of Mesopotamian states to rulers of city-states themselves. The Amorite language is examined within the Semitic language family, based on onomastic evidence, lexical borrowings, and two bilingual texts. Particular attention is devoted to the city of Mari, where Amorite linguistic features are most clearly attested.
