Technics, Individuation and Symbolic Misery: The Political Dimension of the Philosophy of Bernard Stiegler

Abstract

This work is concerned with the philosophical project of contemporary French thinker Bernard Stiegler. His thought exists at the borders of studies of technology, critical theory and phenomenology. It offers a unique conception of the interrelationship between humans and technologies, which allows for a creative reconceptualization of many of the central topics of philosophy, such as the nature of individuality or the relationship between an individual and the collective. Further it also opens new avenues of thinking within the classical topics of critical theory, like the criticism of contemporary consumer capitalism or of understanding the effects of culture industry. Stiegler's work itself is, however, spread amongst his many books and is made more difficult to understand by his use of many unique terms. The goal of this work is then to serve as a kind of an introduction to his thought. I want to offer an explanation for many of his key concepts as they are laid out particularly in the Technics and Time series. Only in the next part will I then discuss the political significance of these ideas and how Stiegler utilizes them in his later political work. Tato prace se zabýva filozofickým projektem soucasneho francouzskeho mýslitele Bernarda Stieglera. Jeho mýslení se nachazí na hranicích studií technologie, kriticke teorie a fenomenologie. Nabízí unikatní koncepci vzajemneho vztahu lidí a technologií, ktere umoznuje kreativní rekonceptualizaci mnohých z centralních temat filozofie, jako napríklad podstatý individualitý a vztahu individua a spolecnosti. Dale take otevíra nove moznosti uvazovaní nad týpickými tematý kriticke teorie, mimo jine kritiký soucasneho konzumního kapitalismu, jako i kulturního prumýslu. Samotna Stieglerova prace je vsak rozvinuta napríc jeho mnohými knihami a je rovnez tezko uchopitelna, kvuli jeho invenci mnohých nových termínu. Cílem teto prace je tedý slouzit jako jistý uvod k jeho mýslení. Chci nabídnout výsvetlení mnohých z jeho klícových pojmu, tak jak jsou rozvrzený predevsím v jeho serii Technics and Time. V nasledující casti ukazi politický presah techto idejí, a take jak je Stiegler sam uzíva v jeho pozdejsích, politických textech.
