Title: Deformation of icy moons induced by heat flux variations from the ocean Author: Martin Kihoulou Department: Department of Geophysics Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géosciences Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. Ondřej Čadek, CSc., Department of Geophysics Dr. Gaël Choblet, Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géosciences Abstract: Several icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn harbor liquid water oceans beneath their icy shells, offering possibly habitable environment or even an opportunity for the emergence of life outside the Earth. Icy moon Titan possesses a dense atmosphere and liquid hydrocarbon lakes on its surface, yet it remains unclear how are the volatiles transported from the moon's interior through a 100-km-thick ice shell. Recent studies revealed (i) an important effect of the pressure-dependent melting temperature (DAL effect) on the solid-state convection and (ii) long-wavelength variations in oceanic heat flux shaped by the oceanic circulation. In this thesis, we model the ice shell as an open thermodynamic system that can exchange both energy and mass with the subsurface ocean. Our results show how the character of material exchange depends on the heat transfer regime and on the amplitude of the DAL effect, and that large topography ( 100 m) can be observed at the surface only if the ice shell is in...
