Gender analysis of perception of Russian invasion of Ukraine by Ukrainian men living in the Czech Republic

Abstract

Od začátku ruské rozsáhlé invaze na Ukrajinu a zahájení války prožívají ukrajinští muži žijící v zahraničí, kteří opustili Ukrajinu před 24. únorem 2022, celou škálu emocí. Na jedné straně muž nemusí bojovat pouze v zákopech, je zřejmé, že své zemi můžete pomoci i jinými způsoby, včetně darování peněz armádě, humanitárním fondům, pomoci ukrajinským uprchlíkům, nákupu munice pro ukrajinské vojáky atd. Na druhé straně stále v patriarchální ukrajinské společnosti existují genderové stereotypy o mužských hrdinech a ženských obětech, a to navzdory skutečnosti, že Ukrajina má mezi členy NATO jedny z největších počtů žen v ozbrojených silách. Cílem diplomové práce je zkoumat, jak ukrajinští muži prožívají válku na Ukrajině při studiu nebo práci v České republice. První část mé práce je věnována válce a genderu a jejich propojení. Dalším cílem práce je poukázat na běžné klišé používané při přemýšlení o válce a nabídnout nový pohled na ni. Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the start of the war, Ukrainian men who live abroad and who had left Ukraine before February 24, 2022 are experiencing a range of emotions. On the one hand, a man can fight not only in the trenches, it is obvious that you can help your country in other ways, including donating money to the army, humanitarian funds, helping Ukrainian refugees, buying ammunition for Ukrainian soldiers, etc. On the other hand, in patriarchal Ukrainian society there are still gender stereotypes about male heroes and female victims, despite the fact that Ukraine has one of the largest numbers of women in the Armed Forces among NATO member countries. The aim of the diploma thesis is to investigate how Ukrainian men experience the war in Ukraine while studying or working in the Czech Republic. The first part of my work is devoted to war and gender and their interconnection. Another aim of the thesis is to point out common cliches used when thinking about war and offer a new perspective of seeing it.
