Heteronormativity in Yaoi: A Feminist Analysis of Japanese Homoerotic Graphic Novels

Abstract

Cílem této práce je skrze feministickou perspektivu analyzovat tři yaoi mangy, jinými slovy Japonské homoerotické grafické romány, a zjistit zda zobrazované vztahy a sdělení obsažená v tomto médiu jsou heteronormativní a zda se dopouštějí heterosexualizování homosexuality. Přestože yaoi žánr pochází z Japonska, v poslední době nabírá na popularitě i na západě. Yaoi je jedinečné medium, které obsahuje homoerotické vztahy a motivy, často obsahující pravidla a stereotypy typické pro tento žánr. Proto věřím, že hlubší prozkoumání těchto motivů, vztahů a postav může přinést zajímavý vzhled do toho, jak tento žánr konstruuje gender a homosexuální vztahy. Za tímto účelem používám obsahovou analýzu a pracuji s intersekcí genderové identity a sexuální orientace. The goal of this thesis is to analyze three distinct yaoi mangas, in other words Japanese homoerotic graphic novels, through feminist perspective and to ascertain whether the relationships and themes transported through these media are heteronormative in nature and engage in the so-called "heterosexualizing homosexuality" practice. Despite the yaoi genre originating in Japan, it has been gaining increasing traction and popularity in the West, where it has also been reproduced by western artists and fans. Yaoi constitutes a very unique media featuring homoerotic relationships and themes, many of which follow rules and stereotypes typical for this genre. That is why I believe a deeper dive into the themes, relationships and characters depicted in these novels might yield interesting insights into the constructions of gender and homosexual relationships as envisioned by this genre. To do so, this thesis utilizes conceptual content analysis and works with an intersectionality of gender identity and sexual orientation.
