Comparative phonetic analysis of poetry recital in Scots and Scottish Standard English

Abstract

This thesis analyses the prosody of Scots and Scottish Standard English (SSE) through poetry for the purposes of comparing the two languages. It first outlines the complex status of Scots and describes the importance of poetry for this language. Secondly, the core aim of the thesis is to compare the dynamic movement within prosodic phrases in a set of recited poems in the two languages. The hypothesis is that the sociolinguistic status of Scots and its close connection with poetry manifest in greater dynamic range (difference between stressed and unstressed syllables) of the Scots poems as compared to their SSE versions. Using Praat, the research processes 33 recordings -15 in SSE and 18 in Scots - by six native speakers. The recordings were segmented into phones, words, and prosodic phrases, and stressed and unstressed vowels were marked. Acoustic data on fundamental frequency (f0), duration, intensity, and spectral emphasis were extracted. The analysis focuses on how the two languages differ in the intensity and spectral emphasis of stressed and unstressed vowels. Results show that while individual realizations of the poems differ, Scots generally exhibits a higher dynamic range in both intensity and spectral emphasis, suggesting a correlation with its sociolinguistic context and poetic tradition...

Tato práce nahlíží na prozodii Scots1 a skotské angličtiny skrze poezii za účelem porovnání těchto dvou jazyků. Zaprvé nastiňuje komplexní status Scots a popisuje význam poezie pro tento jazyk. Hlavním cílem práce je poté porovnat dynamický pohyb v prozodických frázích souboru recitovaných básní ve zmíněných svou jazycích. Předpokládá se, že sociolingvistický status Scots a blízký vztah, který má tento jazyk k poezii, se projevují ve větším dynamickém rozpětí (rozdílu mezi přízvučnými a nepřízvučnými slabikami) básní ve Scots ve srovnání s jejich verzemi ve skotské angličtině. Výzkum za pomocí programu Praat zpracovává 33 nahrávek - 15 ve skotské angličtině a 18 ve Scots - od šesti rodilých mluvčích. Nahrávky byly segmentovány na úrovni hlásek, slov a prozodických frází, a byly v nich označeny přízvučné a nepřízvučné slabiky. Poté byla extrahována akustická data týkající se základní frekvence (f0), trvání, intenzity a spektrálního důrazu. Analýza se soustředí na to, jak se tyto dva jazyky liší v intenzitě a spektrálním důrazu přízvučných a nepřízvučných samohlásek. Výsledky ukazují, že byť se realizace jednotlivých básní liší, Scots obecně vykazuje větší dynamické rozpětí v intenzitě i spektrálním důrazu, což může souviset se zmíněným sociolingvistickým kontextem a básnickou tradicí Scots.
