Kant on the Use and Reflection of Concepts

Abstract

(in English) The aim of this thesis lies at the intersection of two issues in contemporary Kantian scholarship: Kant's alleged conceptualism and the role of reflective judgment in relation to determining judgment. I argue for a minimalist conceptualist reading: the representation of objects requires the application of concepts, but only of categories in synthesis of the imagination. I argue against understanding this synthesis in terms of judgment, whether one does so explicitly (judgmentalism), or implicitly, in presupposing a reflective model of synthesis (reflective-schematism). The use of empirical concepts and the formation of judgments are possible only after this elementary synthesis. On the second point, I argue that reflective judgment is needed to bridge the gap between sensible synthesis and determining judgment. By introducing of a systematic role for the reflective judgment, I am able to reduce the epistemic demand on the application of categories, and thereby open up a middle way between strong variants of both conceptualism and non-conceptualism. (česky) Cíl práce je situován do střetnutí dvou problematik současného kantovského bádání, totiž otázky Kantova konceptualismu a role reflektivního soudu ve vztahu k určujícímu soudu. Argumentuji pro minimalistické konceptualistické čtení: reprezentace objektu vyžaduje aplikaci pojmů, nicméně pouze kategorií v syntéze obrazotvornosti. Vymezuji se proti čtením, které tuto syntézu chápají na způsob soudu, ať už tak činí explicitně (judgmentalism), nebo implicitně, když podmiňují syntézu reflexí (reflective-schematism). Užití empirických pojmů a formování soudů je možné až po této základní syntéze. Ve vztahu k druhé problematice argumentuji pro tezi, že reflektivní soud je třeba pro překlenutí mezery mezi syntézou obrazotvornosti a určujícím soudem. Zavedení systematické role reflektivního soudu umožňuje snížit epistemický nárok na aplikaci kategorií a otevřít tak střední cestu mezi silnými variantami konceptualismu a non-konceptualismu.
