Feminist Alliances and the Politics of the Body in Recent and Contemporary Art 1990-2019

Abstract

This thesis offers a feminist reading of alliances and the politics of the body in recent art from 1990 to 2019. Through archival research, theory and interviews, I trace the social and political context for a range of artworks situated in entangled, material, discursive, and intergenerational networks. With references to the work of philosophers and theorists including Elizabeth Grosz, Karen Barad, Rossi Braidotti, Gail Lewis, and Hannah Arendt, I position alliances as a counter strategy to the body in crisis - its abstraction, extraction, dematerialisation and commodification - to assert the importance of its politics. In response to unstable body politics, the thesis focuses on alliances that artists make to mobilise feminist politics in their artworks by examining different forms of relationality - activist organising and institutional practice, intergenerational relationships, networks and assemblages - while showing the possibilities and effects of such strategies. By releasing the body from its normative role, I show alliance's transformative potential, through both theory and art practice, to sustain the contradictions, difficulties and vulnerabilities that define feminist art histories. Tato disertace zkoumá z feministické perspektivy formy spojenectví utvářené politikou těla v nedávném a současném umění od roku 1990 do roku 2019. S pomocí archivního a teoretického výzkumu i rozhovorů sleduji společenský a politický rozsah a kontext vybraných uměleckých děl v materiálních, diskurzivních a mezigeneračních sítích vztahů. S odkazem na díla filozofů*ek a teoretiků*ček, zejména Elizabeth Grosz, Karen Barad, Rosi Braidotti, Gail Lewis či Hannah Arendt, stavím aliance jako strategie, jež se vymezují vůči tělu v krizi - tedy jeho abstrakci, extrakci, dematerializaci a komodifikaci - a zdůrazňuji důležitost přenastavení politiky tělesnosti. Jako odpověď se tento výzkum zaměřuje na aliance mobilizující politiku těla z feministických pozic a zkoumá tak vztahové dynamiky v současném a nedávném umění, kde se soustředí zejména na aktivistické přístupy a institucionální praktiky, mezigenerační vztahy i asambláže a sítě. Oproštěním tělesnosti od normativní role se snažím poukázat na transformativní potenciál aliancí pro teorii i uměleckou praxi s důrazem na udržení komplexity a překonání rozporů a protikladů, které určují feministické dějiny umění.
