Abstract

This thesis examines the presidential campaign of Republican Senator Barry Goldwater in the 1964 United States presidential election, in the context of his vote against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The thesis analyzes the legislative process leading to the passage of the Act, the 1964 presidential election, and the subsequent changes in the structure of the Republican Party's electoral base. The aim of the thesis is to explain why Goldwater voted against the Act and to assess the consequences this decision had on the transformation of the party's electorate, particularly concerning African-American and white voters in the Southern United States. The introductory part of the thesis provides an overview of the domestic political situation in the United States in the early 1960s, with attention to the significance of the civil rights movement. The following chapter focuses on Goldwater's political career. The main part of the thesis traces the legislative process of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including an analysis of the arguments that led Senator Goldwater to reject it. Táto práca sa zaoberá prezidentskou kampaňou republikánskeho senátora Barryho Goldwatera vo voľbách v roku 1964 v Spojených štátoch amerických, v kontexte jeho hlasu proti Zákonu o občianskych právach z roku 1964. Práca analyzuje legislatívny proces prijatia zákona, prezidentské voľby v roku 1964 a následné zmeny v štruktúre voličskej základne Republikánskej strany. Cieľom práce je objasniť, prečo Goldwater hlasoval proti zákonu a zhodnotiť, aké následky mal tento krok na premenu elektorátu strany, najmä vo vzťahu k afroamerickým a bielym voličom na Juhu USA.
