Prehľad patologických zmien na fosílnom materiáli dinosaurov, so zameraním na sauropody

Abstract

Od sedemdesiatych rokov osemnásteho storočia si vedecká komunita začala všímať patologické zmeny na kostiach dávnych tvorov a ľudí. Vďaka nadšenej práci paleontológov, lekárov, chirurgov a geológov tak začalo vznikať nové interdisciplinárne vedné odvetvie, ktoré sa nazýva paleopatológia. Paleopatológia mapuje rozšírenie a vývoj ochorení v histórií a vo fosílnom zázname. Taktiež prináša nové poznatky o etológií dávnych tvorov. Cieľom tejto práce bolo podrobné zmapovanie rozšírenia rôznych patologických zmien u jedných z najikonickejších organizmov v histórií zeme. Týmito organizmami sú nevtáčí dinosauri, pričom sa táto práca špeciálne zamerala na skupinu Sauropoda. Pomocou podrobného štúdia literatúry som zaznamenal výskyt patologických zmien v závislosti na rôznych čeľadiach, či na postihnutých častiach kostry. Taktiež boli opísané znaky, na základe ktorých je možné rozlišovať prejavy chorôb a zranení vo fosílnom zázname. V rámci tejto práce boli stručne opísané metódy paleopatologického výskumu, história tejto vednej disciplíny a mnohé fascinujúce prípady patologických zmien, ktoré boli spôsobené etológiou týchto dávnych tvorov.

Since the 1770s, the scientific community has begun to notice the pathological changes in the bones of ancient creatures and humans. Thanks to the enthusiastic work of paleontologists, physicians, surgeons, and geologists, a new interdisciplinary scientific field, called paleopathology, has emerged. Paleopathology creates an overview of the distribution and evolution of diseases throughout history and within the fossil record. It also brings new insights into the ethology of extinct organisms. The aim of this thesis was to produce a detailed survey of the distribution of various pathological changes in some of the most iconic organisms in the Earth's history. These organisms are non-avian dinosaurs, with this work focusing specifically on the Sauropoda. Through a thorough literature review, I have recorded occurrences of pathological changes according to different families and affected regions of the skeleton. Characteristics by which disease manifestations and injuries can be distinguished in the fossil record were also described. Finally, this thesis briefly describes the methods of paleopathological research, the history of this discipline, and several fascinating cases of pathological changes created by the ethology of these ancient creatures.
