Supraglacial lakes represent a specific type of glacial lakes that forms in depressions on the glacier surface. These lakes are characterised by dynamic development, relatively short lifespan and they play a crucial role in glacier ablation. The development and expansion, as well as their merging in one large lake, may potentially be a threat of GLOF (glacier lake outburst flood). The first part of this thesis consists of review of scientific literature focusing on the factors that influence formation and development of supraglacial lakes. Based on defined criteria, 11 glaciers from the Cordillera Blanca mountain range were selected, and the factors of formation and development of supraglacial lakes were analysed for the period from 2015 to 2023 using satellite imagery in Google Earth Pro. The results indicate that the most significant factor influencing formation of supraglacial lakes is the surface gradient. Debris cover primarily affects the spatial distribution and lake stability.
