War and Media: Framing Analysis of the 2023 Israel-Hamas War in Czech Media

Abstract

This thesis examines the Czech media's framing of the Gaza war that erupted following the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October 2023. It focuses on articles from ten Czech online media outlets, published between 7 October 2023 and 31 January 2024, sourced from the Newton Media database. The selected outlets include Novinky.cz, Seznam Zprávy, Echo24.cz, ParlamentníListy.cz, Deník.cz, iDnes.cz, TN.cz, Deník N, Voxpot, and Deník Alarm. Using a deductive and keyword-based approach, I defined six frames in total. The first three are general frames: the Conflict frame, the Economic Consequences frame, and the Human Interest frame (Semetko and Valkenburg, 2000). Additionally, I identified three issue-specific frames: the Law and Order frame, representing a pro-Israeli perspective; the Injustice and Defiance Frame, with a pro-Palestinian perspective (Wolfsfeld, 1997); and the Peace Frame, based on the concept of Peace Journalism (Galtung, 2003). The descriptive analysis results showed that the majority of articles predominantly contained the Law and Order frame and the Conflict frame. Furthermore, the analysis supports the argument that left-wing and liberal media are more inclined to adopt a pro-Palestinian perspective compared to right-wing and conservative media (Kaposi, 2017; 2014).

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá rámování války v Gaze eskými médii, která vypukla v reakci na teroristický útok Hamásu 7. Yíjna 2023. ZamYuji se na lánky deseti eských online médií, publikované v období od 7. Yíjna 2023 do 31. ledna 2024, které byly získány prostYednictvím databáze Newton Media. Konkrétn jde o lánky z Novinky.cz, Seznam Zprávy, Echo24.cz, ParlamentníListy.cz, Deník.cz, iDnes.cz, TN.cz, Deník N, Voxpot a Deník Alarm. Na základ deduktivního pYístupu pomocí klí ových slov jsem definoval celkem aest rámco. První tYi obecné rámce jsou Rámec konfliktu, Rámec ekonomických dosledko a Rámec lidského zájmu (Semetko a Valkenburg, 2000). Dále jsem identifikoval tYi specifické rámce: Rámec zákona a poYádku, který reprezentuje pro-izraelskou perspektivu, Rámec nespravedlnosti a vzdoru s pro-palestinským pohledem (Wolfsfeld, 1997) a Rámec míru, vycházející z konceptu mírové urnalistiky (Galtung, 2003). Výsledky deskriptivní analýzy ukázaly, e drtivá vtaina lánko vyu ívá Rámec zákona a poYádku a Rámec konfliktu. ZároveI analýza potvrdila argument, e levicová a liberální média astji zaujímají pro-palestinskou perspektivu ne pravicová a konzervativní média (Kaposi, 2017; 2014).
