Unveiling "The Other": The ritual murder accusation of Jews in Spain

Abstract

Tato práce zkoumá obvinění Židů z rituální vraždy na příkladu Svatého dítěte z La Guardia v raně novověkém Španělsku. První část shrnuje akademický výzkum historického, kulturního a náboženského kontextu rituální vraždy a "krvavé pomluvy". Zaměřuje se také na španělské specifické fenomény v rituální vraždě, jako je nahrazení magického použití srdce místo krve nebo, že obvinění jsou částečně namířena proti židovským konvertitům ke křesťanství, conversos, což funguje jako příklad rané tranzice antijudaismu v antisemitismus. Ve druhé části je obvinění ukázáno jako specifický typ mýtického vyprávění o "Jiném", které znovu-ustanovuje společnost. To je představeno historickým a sociálně-náboženským kontextem z první části, ale také skrz různé symbolické mechanismy, s nimiž obvinění pracuje a které jsou ukázány prostřednictvím aplikace multidisciplinární perspektivy religionistiky. This work examines the ritual murder accusation against Jews, with a focus on the case of the Holy Child of La Guardia in Early Modern Spain. The first part of the study summarizes academic research on the historical, cultural, and religious contexts of ritual murder and blood libel, emphasizing the unique aspects of the Spanish phenomenon. These include the substitution of the magical use of the heart instead of blood and the targeting of Jewish converts to Christianity, or conversos, which served as an early form of anti-Judaism that later evolved into anti-Semitism. The second part of the analysis interprets this accusation as a specific type of mythic narrative about the Other, which functions to re-establish societal boundaries. This interpretation is situated within the historical and socio-religious context outlined in the first part and is explored through the application of a multidisciplinary perspective within religious studies, highlighting the symbolic mechanisms at play in the accusation.
