Intermediate cytotypes may play a significant role within polyploid complexes by stabilizing cytotype-mixed populations and enhancing their fitness. The motivation for their study stems from their ability to produce cytotype variable gametes, which can allow the introgression of potentially important genes across the cytotype barrier. This thesis investigates the frequency and potential of heteroploid hybridization in cytotype-mixed populations of invasive taxa from the genus Symphyotrichum Nees (Asteraceae) in Central Europe, originated from North America. Both in their native and invaded areas, individuals with heptaploid cytotype are known to exist and form a transition between hexaploid and octoploid cytotypes within cytotype-mixed populations. These intermediate cytotypes have been considered as results of hybridisation between plants with different ploidy levels; but their frequency and evolutionary potencial remains unclear. The potential for heteroploid hybridization of invasive taxa of the genus Symphyotrichum was tested in cytotype-mixed populations of hexaploid cytotypes of S. novi-belgii, S. ×versicolor, and the octoploid cytotype of S. lanceolatum. DNA ploidy levels were determined using flow cytometry. To detect fertility of intermediate cytotypes, a combination of pollen analyses,...
