Sweet Science and Gender on the Ropes: Gender in Amateur Boxing Communities

Abstract

Kdysi minoritní téma boxu neboli "sladké vědy" o modřinách si v průběhu let získalo pozornost mnoha sociologů a socioložek nebo etnografů a etnografek. Rostoucí počet studií na toto téma pokrývá celou řadu přístupů zahrnujících nejen konfrontaci těl, ale také různá pojetí identity, prolínání genderu, rasy a třídy a další formy marginalizace. Cílem tohoto výzkumu je na základě konceptů somatechniky a "dělání genderu", teorií, feministické fenomenologie a zvukových studií analyzovat složitost práce s tělem a genderového/sexuálního ztělesnění v kontextu amatérské boxerské kultury v zemích středovýchodní Evropy. Práce zkoumá zvukovou dimenzi boxu a odhaluje, jak hudba a zvuk ovlivňují genderové ztělesnění v a prostřednictvím boxu. Přistupuje k boxu jako ke specifickému druhu somatechnologie a sleduje způsoby, jakými je boxerské tělo utvářeno prostřednictvím souhry lékařských diskurzů, regulačních praktik sportovních institucí a "měkkých" technologií genderu/sexu. Výzkum vychází z údajů shromážděných a vytvořených prostřednictvím multisenzorické etnografie podpořené metodami uměleckého výzkumu. Once a minority subject, boxing or the "sweet science" of bruising has, over the years, grasped the attention of many sociologists and ethnographers. The increasingly numerous studies on this topic cover a range of approaches involving confrontation not only between bodies but also between different conceptions of identity, the intersectionality of gender, race, and class, and other forms of marginalisation. Drawing from the concepts of somatechnics and doing gender, feminist phenomenology and engaging with sound studies, this research aims to analyse the complexity of bodily labour and gendered/sexed embodiment in the context of amateur boxing culture in the countries of Central Eastern Europe. The thesis examines the sonic dimension of boxing and shows how music and sound/ing affect the gendering of embodiment in and through boxing. Moreover, approaching boxing as a particular kind of somatechnology, it traces how the gendered boxing body emerges through the interplay of medical discourses, regulatory practices of sporting institutions and soft technologies of gender/sex.
