"Nesmírná krása, ohromná past": Římské cesty Josefa Svatopluka Machara a Jaroslava Durycha

Abstract

This thesis deals with the tradition of literary reflections on journeys to Rome and Italy by comparing two Czech essayistic travelogues that fall into this tradition - Josef Svatopluk Machar's Rome and Jaroslav Durych's Roman Journey. Both of these texts present very specific and contrasting representations of the traveller's experience and stay in the "eternal city". On the basis of the genre and Italian-travel contextualization of both works and the theoretical conceptualization of the two basic themes (the issue of movement in travel writing and the concept of Rome as a text or palimpsest), it was possible to analyze the common features of both works as well as significant differences in a comprehensive way. Both author-travelers bring with them to Rome their own, very specific and highly exacerbated view of Italy, history, art or religion, and these dispositions are strongly manifested in the way they elaborate their experience of travel and Rome in their texts. Josef Svatopluk Machar traverses Roman history, creating a strong opposition between antiquity and Christianity, and is completely captivated by Rome. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tradicí literárních reflexí cest do Říma a Itálie na základě komparace dvou českých esejistických cestopisů, které do této tradice spadají - Řím Josefa Svatopluka Machara a Římská cesta Jaroslava Durycha. Oba tyto texty představují velmi specifické a kontrastní ztvárnění cestovatelského zážitku a pobytu ve "věčném městě". Na základě žánrové a italsko-cestopisné kontextualizace obou děl a teoretické konceptualizace dvou základních témat (problematiky pohybu v cestopisech a pojetí Říma jakožto textu či palimpsestu) bylo možné komplexním způsobem analyzovat společné rysy obou děl stejně jako významné rozdíly mezi nimi. Oba autoři-cestovatelé si přinášejí s sebou do Říma vlastní, velmi specifický a značně vyhrocený pohled na Itálii, historii, umění či náboženství, přičemž tyto jejich dispozice se výrazně projevují v tom, jakým způsobem svůj prožitek cesty a Říma ve svých textech zpracovávají. Josef Svatopluk Machar prochází římskou historií, vytváří silnou opozici antiky a křesťanství, Řím ho zcela uchvacuje. Jaroslav Durych hledá své místo v nesrozumitelném světě prostřednictvím niterných, básnických reflexí. Oba cestopisy svým osobitým ztvárněním Říma navazují na tradici "římského textu" a zároveň ji oba, každý po svém, aktualizují.
