Tento výzkum se zabývá transformačními politickými cestami zemí východního bloku po rozpadu Sovětského svazu a zdůrazňuje odlišné cesty, kterými se vydaly - od demokracie k autokracii. Ústředním bodem tohoto zkoumání je silná role nacionalismu, zejména dynamika inkluzivního a exkluzivního nacionalismu, při řízení těchto přechodů. Prostřednictvím srovnávacích analýz studie odhaluje složitou souhru faktorů, které ovlivnily trajektorie těchto národů. Zjištění nejen mapují cestu k demokracii v komunistických zemích, ale také osvětlují hluboký vliv nacionalismu na tyto metamorfózy.
