"MAKE THEM PAY YOU WHAT THEY WOULD PAY A WHITE MAN": intersekcionální feministická analýza knihy The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Abstract

In this diploma thesis I analyze the book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo from intersectional feminist point of view. The author of this book is Taylor Jenkins Reid, 1st edition came out in 2017 and became popular thanks to not only social media. In the first part of my thesis I focus on overview of theory and methodology, which I work with later, such as intersectionality, gender, race, sexuality. In this context I am interested in theorizing the concepts of male gaze, female gaze and toxic and healthy masculinity. I also focus on literature and feminism and the portrayal of femininity in literature. In the analytical part of my diploma thesis, I analyze characters chronologically using the original structure of the book. My interest in analysis is in the construction of gender, race and sexuality. I focus on how the author constructs sexual and gender identity in concrete historical as well as social context and how are relationships of the main heroine constructed in this context. V této diplomové práci se zabývám intersekcionální feministickou analýzou knihy The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Autorkou je Taylor Jenkins Reid, prvně vyšla v roce 2017 a následně se stala hitem nejen díky sociálním sítím. V první části práce se věnuji představení teorie a metodologie, ze které vycházím v analytické části. Nejprve problematizuji kategorie, se kterými budu pracovat, jako je intersekcionalita, gender, rasa, sexualita. V tomto kontextu mě zajímají též koncepty male gaze, female gaze a toxická a zdravá maskulinita. Věnuji se též literatuře a feminismu a zobrazení femininity v literatuře. V analytické části postupuji chronologicky podle děje, využívám členění, jaké je v knize a analyzuji jednotlivé postavy z hlediska konstrukce genderu, rasy a sexuality. Zajímá mne také, jak je tematizována sexuální a genderová identita v konkrétním historicko-sociálním kontextu a jak jsou v tomto kontextu konstruovány jednotlivé vztahy hlavní hrdinky.
