Transformations of historical city centres due to touristification within the context of the pandemic of covid-19: The case study of the Royal Way in Prague

Abstract

The goal of the thesis is to analyse the touristification of the historical centre of Prague within the context of the pandemic covid-19. Due to the high concentration of tourists and the long-term research in this area, the case study of the Royal Way in Prague was chosen. The Royal Way connects the most known and beautiful monuments in Prague. Therefore, it was significantly changed by tourism since the 1990s. Most of the stores were adapted to tourism. At the same time, the revitalization of historical buildings occurred. The pandemic covid-19 was the event which subdued tourism for over 2 years. Hence, the question arose of how the situation would affect the ongoing touristification of the Royal Way. That was the goal of the study. Hence, the analysis of the functional environment on the Royal Way before (the summer of 2015), during (the summer of 2020 and 2021) and after (the summer of 2022) the pandemic was executed. Práce se zabývá turistifikací historického centra Prahy v kontextu pandemie covid-19. Z důvodu velké koncentrace turistů a dlouhodobého výzkumu v tomto území byla zvolena případová studie Královské cesty. Královská cesta spojuje nejznámější a nejnavštěvovanější místa v Praze. Proto došlo od devadesátých let k výrazné proměně tohoto území, kdy se tato oblast začala přizpůsobovat turismu. Většina obchodů byla proměněna na obchody pro turisty. Zároveň však došlo i k revitalizaci fyzického prostředí. Pandemie covid-19 na téměř 2 roky výrazně utlumila cestovní ruch, a proto bylo otázkou, jak situace ovlivní turistifikaci Královské cesty. To bylo zjišťováno na zakládě analýzy funkčního prostředí v létě 2015 (období před pandemií), 2020 a 2021 (období pandemie) a 2022 (období po pandemii) s využitím konceptu path dependency. Práce je rozdělena na tři hlavní části. První kapitola představuje hlavně světovou a českou literaturu na téma overturismu a turistifikace a koncept path dependency. Následující kapitola představuje použité metody, způsob vymezení území, zpracování a analýzu dat. Poslední kapitola představuje výsledky případové studie.
