Jeffrey Hatcher: Možnosti dramatizace a adaptace

Abstract

Despite the fame Ohio native Jeffrey Hatcher has gained on the American continent, he is fairly unknown to the Czech audience. Out of his extensive work only three texts found their way to the Czech domestic stages. Including: A Picasso, Compleat Female Stage Beauty and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. It can be noted that all the works mentioned above are adaptations in a certain sense of the word. However, it is necessary to admit that the dramas A Picasso and Compleat Female Stage Beauty are only loosely inspired by historical events that served the author's own artistic purposes. Nevertheless, Hatcher's Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde can be considered a real adaptation. The fact that this text is connected to the work of another author, in this case a novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, is not unusual within the work of the discussed playwright. Adaptations (or dramatizations) play a fundamental role in it. For this reason, in my diploma thesis I intend to reflect on the way in which the playwright approaches the text of the original and how he transforms it. I plan to focus more closely on the following texts: A Confederacy of Dunces (based on a novel of a same name by John Kennedy Toole), Compleat Female Stage Beauty (the author's own text which he adapted for a movie screen), Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (based on the...

Navzdory věhlasu, kterého se ohijskému rodákovi Jeffreymu Hatcherovi dostalo na americkém kontinentě, je tento dramatik českému publiku poměrně neznámý. Z jeho značně obsáhlého díla se na tuzemských scénách objevily pouze tři texty. Byly jimi: Picasso, Krás(k)a na scéně a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Lze podotknout, že všechna výše uvedená díla jsou v určitém smyslu slova adaptací. Je ovšem nutné přiznat, že dramata Picasso a Krás(k)a na scéně se pouze volně inspirují historickými příběhy, které autorovi posloužily pro jeho vlastní umělecké záměry. Jako skutečnou adaptaci můžeme nicméně označit Hatcherovo dílo Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Skutečnost, že se tento text pojí s dílem jiného autora, v tomto případě novelou Roberta Louise Stevensona, není v rámci tvorby probíraného dramatika ničím neobvyklým. Adaptace (popřípadě dramatizace) v ní totiž hrají zásadní roli. Z tohoto důvodu se v diplomové práci zamýšlím nad způsobem, jakým zmiňovaný dramatik přistupuje k textu předlohy a jak jej přetváří. Blíže se plánuji věnovat zejména textům A Confederacy of Dunces (podle stejnojmenného románu Johna Kennedyho Toola), Compleat Female Stage Beauty (vlastní text, který autor adaptoval pro filmový snímek), Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (podle zmiňovaného Stevensonova románu Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde), To Fool the...
