Neither of/Either of/None of and S-V agreement: corpus based study

Abstract

The thesis discusses constructions neither of/ either of/ none of in a position of a subject and the agreement they trigger with their respective verb. The theoretical part provides general overview of the pronouns in focus as well as rules for subject-verb agreement after these pronouns in constructions with the preposition of. It also provides definition of notional concord and proximity principle and discusses problematic aspects of the subject-verb agreement and alternative approach to the matter. Furthermore, it discusses subject-verb agreement production in spoken language. The analytical part is based on a corpus based study of two corpora: BNC and 'BNC 2014 Spoken'. From these corpora the highest possible number of examples of neither of/ either of/ none of and a verb are extracted. Followingly, using relative frequency the percentage of verbs in singular and plural in the subject-verb agreement is compared between the two corpora. Bakalářská práce se zabývá konstrukcemi neither of/ either of/ none of v pozici podmětu a jejich shodou s přísudkem. Teoretická část poskytuje obecný přehled výše zmíněných zájmen a pravidel pro shodu podmětu s přísudkem po těchto zájmenech v konstrukcích s předložkou of. Dále také předkládá definice shody podle významu a podle bližšího členu, problematické oblasti shody podmětu s přísudkem a alternativní přístupy k této otázce. Nakonec se také zabývá tvořením shody podmětu s přísudkem v mluveném jazyce. Analytická část se zakládá na korpusové studii dvou korpusů: BNC a 'BNC 2014 Spoken'. Z těchto korpusů je extrahován nejvyšší možný počet výskytů konstrukcí neither of/ either of/ none of se slovesem v přísudku. Z výsledků se pak mezi dvěma korpusy skrze relativní frekvenci porovnává procento výskytů slovesa v jednotném a množném čísle ve shodě podmětu s přísudkem. Bakalářská práce má za cíl potvrdit následující hypotézy: že se ve shodě podmětu s přísudkem v konstrukcích neither of/ either of/ objevují chyby způsobené shodou podle významu a podle bližšího členu, přičemž v případě none of je počet výskytů se shodou v plurálu vyšší než u neither of/ either of/, a že je v mluveném jazyce větší tendence řídit se v konstrukcích s jmenovanými proformami shodou podmětu s přísudkem podle významu a podle bližšího...
