The Phenomenon of the "Intellectual Dark Web"

Abstract

This paper investigates the topic of the "Intellectual Dark Web" - a supposed grouping of academics, authors and other personalities, whose opinions are deemed to be controversial. Due to a lack of academic coverage, the paper pinpoints the background from which this term had arisen and tries to find out whether the group can be considered a coherent entity. The research part of the thesis is divided into two phases. In the first, the three most prominent protagonists (Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, and Ben Shapiro) are subjected to a Critical discourse analysis from which the five most recurrent themes emerge. These are identity, free speech, anti-left, anti-elite, and appeal to reason. Subsequently, ten content pieces for each of the authors are analysed to find out whether these five topics overlap across time and different types of media formats. The biggest overlap was detected in the anti-left rhetoric, although there seemed to be a subtle difference in what the respective men mean when they use the word "Left". Similar conclusions were made on the topic of identity and the opposition to elites. Tato práce se zabývá tématem "Intelektuálního Dark Webu" - údajného uskupení akademiků, autorů a dalších osobností, jejichž názory jsou považovány za kontroverzní. Vzhledem k nedostatku akademické literatury práce objasňuje pozadí, z něhož termín vzešel a zjišťuje, zda je skupina jako celek koherentní. Výzkumná část práce je rozdělena do dvou fází. V první jsou tři nejvýznamnější aktéři (Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris a Ben Shapiro) podrobeni kritické diskursivní analýze, z níž vzejde pět opakujících se témat. Jsou jimi identita, svoboda slova, opozice vůči levici, opozice vůči elitám a apel na rozum. Následně je analyzováno deset vzorků tvorby každého z autorů s cílem zjistit, zda je oněch pět témat přítomno napříč časem a různými typy mediálních formátů. Největší překryv byl zjištěn u proti levicové rétoriky, byť se současně ukázalo, že mezi aktéry existuje jemný rozdíl ve vnímaní slova "levice". Podobné závěry byly učiněny i v případě tématu identity a odporu k elitám. Analýza také ukázala, že kromě zjištěných společných témat se každý z autorů zaměřuje na různé jiné oblasti, v nichž vzhledem k jejich odlišnému ideologickému, a především náboženskému přesvědčení nelze předpokládat takovou shodu.
