C. J. Walker: Její role v rámci afroamerické komunity a v boji za politicko-sociální práva žen

Abstract

This Bachelor Thesis is dedicated to the study of Madam C. J. Walker, who became, at the beginning of the 20th century, the first millionairess in the United States. Her life story is remarkable because of two aspects: she was a woman, and moreover an African American. The Jim Crow era, which brought by racial segregation, racism, and unequal social and political opportunities for African Americans, was certainly not an ideal for building a business. Yet Madam Walker was able to found The Madam Walker Company, which exported her hair and beauty products outside the United States and provided employment opportunities for tens of thousands of African Americans. She targeted the neglected needs of African American women. Alongside her business, Madame Walker engaged in socio-political activism and philanthropy. This thesis aims to analyze Madam Walker's philanthropic and activist acts, and based on this analysis, to determine what role she played within the African American community. The thesis uses a biographical method and is divided into four chapters. The first two chapters deal with the relevant historical context of the late 19th and early 20th centurie in the United States, and the most significant milestones in Madam Walker's life. Bakalářská práce se věnuje životnímu příběhu Madam C. J. Walker, která se stala na počátku 20. století první milionářkou ve Spojených státech. Její životní příběh je pozoruhodný zejména kvůli dvěma aspektům: byla ženou a navíc afroamerického původu. Období Jima Crowa, které se vyznačovalo především rasovou segregací, rasismem a nerovnými sociálními a politickými příležitostmi pro Afroameričany, nebylo rozhodně ideální dobou k podnikání. Přesto Madam Walker dokázala vybudovat firmu The Madam Walker Company, která vyvážela své vlasové a kosmetické produkty i mimo Spojené státy a poskytovala pracovní příležitosti desítkám tisíc Afroameričanů. Zaměřila se totiž na opomíjené potřeby afroamerických žen v oblasti péče o zevnějšek. Souběžně se svým podnikáním se Madam Walker zapojovala do socio-politického aktivismu a dobročinnosti. Práce si klade za cíl za pomoci biografické metody zanalyzovat filantropické a aktivistické činy Madam Walker a na základě této analýzy zjistit, jakou roli hrála v rámci afroamerické komunity.
