Syrian Civil War In Regional Security Perspective

Abstract

This work focusses on the issue of the Syrian civil war within the perspective of the Regional Security Complex theory. The work begins with a theoretical conceptualization of the Regional Security Complex theory. Afterwards, the theoretical conceptualization of the Borderscapes concepts is also provided with an aim to also mention the historical relevance of this concept for the Middle East region. Subsequently, the perception of the Middle East security complex as understood by B. Buzan and O. Waever is provided in order to challenge their perception in the next part of this work. Within this chapter, the relevance of the chosen actors is assessed with both theoretical approaches and subsequently, the traditional perception of the Middle East security complex is put to test based upon the used theoretical conceptualization and concrete information regarding the actors. The successful re-adjustment of the Regional Security Complex theory within the Middle East region is afterwards supported by the empirical description of motives and strategies of all thirteen important actors involved in the Syrian conflict. Finally, a conclusion about the potential benefits and future usage of this work is stated.

Tato práce se zaměřuje na téma syrské občanské války v kontextu teorie Regionálních bezpečnostních komplexů. Práce začíná teoretickou konceptualizací teorie Regionálních bezpečnostních komplexů, po které je rovněž rozveden tzv. koncept Borderscapes a jeho historická relevance v regionu Blízkého východu. V následné části je detailněji popsán region Blízkého východu optikou B. Buzana a O. Waevera s cílem provést kritické přezkoumání jejich pohledu na daný region. Pomocí konceptu Borderscapes a teorie Regionálních bezpečnostních komplexů je nejdříve vyhodnocena relevance jednotlivých aktérů a na základě této teoretické konceptualizace je posléze kriticky přezkoumán samotný pohled B. Buzana a O. Waevera na region Blízkého východu. Korekce jejich tradičního pohledu je v následujících kapitolách podpořena empirickými informacemi o rolích, strategiích a působnosti všech třinácti zvolených aktérů. Poslední kapitolu tvoří závěr, ve kterém jsou shrnuty veškeré přínosy této práce pro její budoucí využití.
