Bengálská svitková malba

Abstract

Disertační práce analyzuje svitkovou malbu bengálské komunity patujů. Tradiční a nové formy tohoto umění jsou definovány na základě výsledků rozsáhlého terénního výzkumu v Západním Bengálsku, dokumentace muzejních i soukromých sbírkových fondů a relevantních studií publikovaných k tomuto tématu. Bengálské svitkové obrazy představují svébytnou tradici v celku indické narativní malby. Narativní prvky jsou v indickém náboženském umění patrné od starověku. Práce nejprve sleduje dějiny svitkové malby v Indii, které jsou však obtížně rekonstruovatelné kvůli nedostatku pramenů, a to jak hmotných tak textových. Pak se práce soustředí na bengálské prostředí, kde svitkové obrazy začaly být sbírány a zkoumány teprve během dvacátých a třicátých let 20. století, kdy zde bylo autentické svitkové umění již citelně narušeno, neboť původní společenské a ekonomické vazby bengálského venkova se rozpadaly a svitkoví malíři přicházeli o publikum, které je živilo. Práce dokládá, že ačkoli umění patujů ve svém původním významu neoddělitelně slučovalo výtvarnou, slovesnou a dramatickou složku (obraz, doprovodnou píseň a performanci), tak během druhé poloviny 20. století obraz vystoupil z tohoto tradičního funkčního celku a stal se samostatným uměleckým artefaktem a umění patujů se tak transformovalo z principiálně performativního...

The dissertation thesis analyzes the scroll paintings of the Bengali patua community. The definition of traditional and new forms of this art is based on the results of an extensive field research in West Bengal, documentation of museums and private collections, and relevant studies published on the subject. Bengali scroll paintings represent an indigenous tradition in the whole of the Indian narrative paintings. Narrative elements have been present in the Indian religious art since ancient times. The thesis first focuses on the history of the scroll painting in India, which is, however, hard to reconstruct due to the lack of material as well as text sources. Next the thesis concentrates on the Bengali region, where the scroll paintings have been collected and examined only since the twenties and the thirties of the 20th century. At this time, the authentic patua art of the region was already significantly impaired, because the original social and economic ties were breaking down, and the scroll painters were loosing the audience that had supported them.
