Éra rekonstrukce po americké občanské válce v politických a společenských souvislostech

Abstract

(in English): This thesis deals with the early stages of the post-US Civil War Reconstruction era, commencing during first half of 1865, followed by the presidential term of Andrew Johnson until the inauguration of his successor Ulysses S. Grant in 1869. The aim of this work is an analysis of the post-war development of the USA with an emphasis on the changes in the southern states, formerly united within the Confederacy. The thesis also highlights the tensions between President Johnson and the Republican Congress, the so-called "Reconstruction Amendments" to the Constitution, racially motivated violence in the South, the failure of the Freedmen's Bureau humanitarian efforts and the presidential election of 1868. The work adheres to the chronological narrative of the most important events within the individual chapters dedicated to different aspects of history of the United States of America at the dawn of Gilded Age.

(česky) Tato diplomová práce se zabývá ranými fázemi tzv. rekonstrukčního období v poválečných Spojených státech amerických, přibližně od první poloviny roku 1865 přes údobí mandátu prezidenta Andrewa Johnsona až do nástupu prezidenta Ulyssese S. Granta v roce 1869. Tato práce sumarizuje a analyzuje komplexní společenský a politický vývoj v USA s důrazem na změny v jižních státech, sdružených během občanské války v rámci Konfederace. V práci jsou vyzdvižena zejména témata napjatých vztahů prezidenta Johnsona a republikánského Kongresu, poválečných ústavních dodatků, rasově motivovaného násilí na území Jihu, neúspěchu humanitární činnosti federální agentury Freedmen's Bureau či prezidentských voleb roku 1868. Práce se drží chronologického narativu nejdůležitějších událostí v rámci jednotlivých kapitol, nahlížejících na odlišné aspekty historie Spojených států amerických na prahu tzv. Gilded Age.
