5 Abstract Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a serious medical problem, the incidence and prevalence of which are constantly increasing in developed countries. The disease has a poor prognosis, and diagnosis and treatment are challenging, not only medically but also economically. Although the prognosis of patients with CHF has improved significantly due to advances in the treatment of heart failure in recent decades, reduced quality of life and still high mortality persist. The use of established mortality risk factors such as the determination of the degree of functional impairment using the NYHA (New York Heart Association) classification, the need for specific treatment, some laboratory values, and the assessment of cardiac function with the determination of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) do not accurately predict the risk of death of an individual patient with heart failure. Laboratory determination of specific biological indicators of various pathophysiological processes - biomarkers - can contribute to the specification of this risk. These are various biological substances that are identified as parameters of cardiac overload, myocardial dysfunction, remodeling, fibrosis, cardiomyocyte damage, etc. and that appear in increased concentrations in the blood of patients with this syndrome. The...
