Romantické postavy v díle Victora Huga

Abstract

Přestože je Victor Hugo považován za čelního představitele romantismu, nalezneme v jeho díle i mnoho realistických prvků. Vysvětlili jsme, že realismus není opozicí k romantismu, ale že se oba proudy vzájemně prostupují, že romantismus je východiskem realismu. V námi studovaných románech nalezneme řadu společných tematických prvků, a to jak romantických, tak realistických. Autorův přístup k nim ale není nikdy jednoznačný. Romantický motiv masky je doveden ad absurdum, vězení, pro některé romantiky prostředí plné tajemna a příjemného mrazení, vykresluje Hugo hrozivě realisticky, naopak pro realistické téma sociálních problémů staví Hugo do popředí zcela romantického hrdinu. O žádné z Hugových próz nemůžeme jednoznačně říci, že je realistická nebo romantická. Ve všech najdeme vedle sebe prvky a motivy obou směrů, vzájemně se prolínají a doplňují, jeden vychází z druhého. Paul Bénichou charakterizoval tuto syntézu jako "harmonii mezi reálnem a ideálnem, smyslem a duchem, přirozeným a možným".
