This thesis examines gender identity and its performativity in contemporary visual art, focusing on the relationship between the artistic medium and the subject. The theoretical section draws on Jacques Lacan's and Michel Foucault's concepts of identity and subjectivity and elaborates in particular on Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, supplemented by Nicholas Mirzoeff's perspective on visuality and Jack Halberstam's views on the aesthetics of failure and low theory. On this basis, the thesis analyzes performative strategies in contemporary art- embodiment, the subversion of gender norms, drag as a tool of deconstruction, and trans* representation. The author's own work translates these theoretical foundations into her own creative practice: the series What I Dream of When I'm Awake engages with Lacan's mirror stage and draws inspiration from the work of Rebecca Ackroyd, while the series (be)longing explores imposter syndrome through references to the work of Claude Cahun. The pedagogical section applies the theme of identity to art education in high school through three instructional units (experimental self-portraiture, digital photomontage, and linocut) and documents their progression as well as the resulting student works. The thesis thus connects theoretical reflection on gender...
