The Portrayal of Family and Motherhood in Helen Garner's novels Monkey Grip and The Children's Bach

Abstract

This diploma thesis revolves around the interpretation of the novels Monkey Grip (1977) and The Children's Bach (1984) written by a contemporary Australian author, Helen Garner. The theoretical part examines different sources concerning the genre of the family novel, its characteristics, history, as well as stereotypes connected with the portrayal of parenthood in fiction. Next, the theoretical part examines femininity and the role of women in Australian history, the Women's Liberation Movement during the 1970s in Australia, and the connection between this movement and the overall approach to motherhood in Australian society and culture. The practical part of this thesis analyses the novel Monkey Grip, its position within the family novel genre in relation to its unconventional portrayal of family, and its portrayal of parenthood figures. Next, it interprets the influence of the changes caused by women's liberation on the novel's portrayal of society as well as the novel's portrayal of motherhood. The second part of the practical part interprets the novel The Children's Bach, and similarly to the previous chapter, its position within the family novel genre and its portrayal of parenthood figures in relation to the family novel and the often stereotypical portrayal of parenthood. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá interpretací románů Monkey Grip (1977) a The Children's Bach (1984) od současné australské autorky Helen Garnerové z perspektivy žánru tzv. rodinného románu a rovněž v rámci australské literatury a kultury. Teoretická část se proto zaměřuje na problematiku žánru rodinného románu, jeho charakteristiku, a historii. Pozornost je věnována i stereotypnímu zobrazování postav rodičů. Závěrečné kapitoly jsou věnovány stručnému popisu přístupu k ženství v australské historii a australským feministickým hnutím za ženská práva 70. let a také shrnutí vlivu tohoto boje na vnímání mateřství v australské společnosti. Praktická část práce se zabývá analýzou románu Monkey Grip a jeho zasazením do žánru rodinného románu a to i navzdory jeho atypickému zobrazení rodiny a rodičovských postav. Je poukázáno i na vliv změn souvisejících s bojem za ženská práva na to, jak román nahlíží na společnost a mateřství. Interpretace dalšího románu, The Children's Bach, je také založená na zkoumání jeho náležitosti k žánru rodinného románu a způsobem jeho zobrazení postav rodičů. Analýza textu rovněž poukazuje na způsob, kterým román zobrazuje rozpor mezi životním stylem ovlivněným tradicemi, jehož základem je nukleární rodina, a životním stylem založeným na svobodě získané během boje za ženská...
