Good Morning, Midnight from the Point of View of its Protagonist's Agency

Abstract

This bachelor thesis approaches the novel Good Morning, Midnight (1939), written by an English Caribbean writer Jean Rhys, from the point of view of its protagonist's agency. It deals with her portrayal as a member of her contemporary society, and the consequences of her position within this society, which is reflected in her subsequent reactions as well as her overall demeanour. The theoretical part of this thesis contains a brief biography and the cultural background of the author, Jean Rhys, together with the description of the contemporary social standards with the focus on the female element. It furthermore includes information relating to the contemporary literary scene with the emphasis on women's production and the overall summary of the modernist contemporary tendencies, together with the approaches to female characters, stressing the concept of female archetypes and stereotypes in literature. The practical part offers the novel's analysis on the main female character's demeanour and the possible reasons causing it.

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá románem Good Morning, Midnight (1939), napsaným karibsko-anglickou spisovatelkou Jean Rhysovou, a věnuje se aktivnímu zapojení jeho protagonistky. Práce zaměřuje pozornost na hlavní ženskou postavu, jakožto na členku její soudobé společnosti, a popisuje její postavení společně s následky tohoto postavení promítajícími se zejména v jejích na to navazujících reakcích a celkovém vystupování. Teoretická část obsahuje stručnou biografii a shrnutí kulturního zázemí autorky, jakožto i popis povahy soudobé společnosti se zaměřením na ženský element. Dále obsahuje informace týkající se soudobé literární scény s akcentem na ženskou tvorbu a shrnutí modernistických tendencí doby a přístupy k ženským postavám v literatuře s důrazem na archetypy a stereotypy, kterým často podléhají. Praktická část této práce obsahuje analýzu románu, přičemž primární důraz je kladen na protagonistku, její celkové vystupování a možné motivace k tomu směřující.
