Abstract

This thesis examines the depiction of gender in Matthew Lewis's The Monk, considering the historical and cultural context of late eighteenth-century Britain. The theoretical part begins by outlining the historical background of the period, focusing on societal transformations, gender expectations, and the role of religion, which are essential for analysing the novel. The second section of the theoretical part explores the emergence of the Gothic novel, to which Matthew Lewis significantly contributed with his works. This section also highlights the connection between Gothic literature and gender representations, exploring the evolution of both Female and Male Gothic traditions and their distinctive characteristics. The final section examines the life of Matthew Lewis, providing an overview of his writing The Monk, the inspirations behind it, and the contemporary reactions it received, providing insight into the cultural and literary context of the work. The practical part analyses how The Monk portrays gender roles and dynamics, with a particular focus on its male and female characters. Tato práce se zabývá tím, jak je gender zobrazen v románu Matthew Lewise The Monk (Mnich), přičemž bere v úvahu historický a kulturní kontext Británie na konci osmnáctého století. První sekce teoretické části začíná představením historického pozadí tohoto období, přičemž se zaměřuje na společenské proměny, genderová očekávání a roli náboženství. Druhá sekce teoretické části se věnuje vzniku gotického románu, žánru, k němuž Matthew Lewis významně přispěl svými díly. Tato sekce také zdůrazňuje obecnou reprezentaci genderu v gotické literatuře, a dále zkoumá vývoj ženských a mužských gotických děl, jejich rozdělení a charakteristických rysů. Závěrečná sekce se zabývá životem Matthew Lewise, poskytuje okolnosti psaní románu The Monk, o tom, kde čerpal inspirace a náměty, a o následných reakcích vzdělaných literátů a kritiků, ale i široké společnosti na toto dílo.
