Perception of non-standard British accents by Czech and Dutch listeners

Abstract

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá postoje nerodilých mluvčích angličtiny z České republiky a Nizozemí k nestandardním, neboli regionálním britským přízvukům, a následně tyto postoje porovnává. Teoretická část představí základní pojmy "postoj" a "přízvuk" a představí výsledky předchozích studií na podobná témata z České republiky a Nizozemí. Hlavní část se skládá z rozboru výrazných fonetických rysů jednotlivých regionálních přízvuků, jimiž jsou Cockney, Scouse, Edinburk, Cardiff a Belfast. V praktické části je představena tvorba percepčního testu a následně analýza získaných dat. Postoje nerodilých mluvčích angličtiny z České republiky a Nizozemí jsou nejdříve analyzovány samostatně a následně jsou porovnány. Percepční test vyplnilo 114 respondentů, z toho 64 Čechů a 50 Nizozemců. Výsledky práce přispějí k lepšímu pochopení národních jazykových postojů a rozdílů mezi nimi. Lidé, kteří se zúčastnili percepčního testu, byli požádáni, aby ohodnotili nahrávky vybraných přízvuků podle jejich příjemnosti, srozumitelnosti, inteligence a důvěryhodnosti. Výsledky ukázaly, že čeští a nizozemští respondenti nejvíce preferovali přízvuk používaný v Cardiffu, a k přízvukům používaným v Belfastu a Edinburku měla většina respondentů neutrální postoj. This bachelor's thesis examines the attitudes of non-native English speakers from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands towards non-standard, or regional, British accents, and subsequently compares these attitudes. The theoretical part introduces the basic concepts of "attitude" and "accent" and presents the results of previous studies on similar topics from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The main part consists of an analysis of the distinctive phonetic features of individual regional accents, which are Cockney, Scouse, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast. The practical part presents the creation of a perception test and subsequently analyses the collected data. The attitudes of non-native English speakers from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands are first analysed separately and then compared. The perception test was completed by 114 respondents, of which 64 were Czechs and 50 were Dutch. The results of the work will contribute to a better understanding of national language attitudes and the differences between them. People who participated in the perception test were asked to rate recordings of selected accents according to their pleasantness, intelligibility, intelligence, and trustworthiness.
