Musical references and intertextuality in Caleb Azumah Nelson's Open Water

Abstract

Cílem této bakalářské práce je popsat roli intertextuality a hudebních referencí v díle Open Water od Caleba Azumah Nelsona. Práce se zaměřuje na analýzu vybraných písní a jejich vliv na děj románu a rozvoj postavy protagonisty. Konkrétněji se věnuje užití hudebních textů a hudebních prostředků, které ilustrují různá témata. Tato analýza objasňuje, jak Nelson spojuje hudbu s literaturou, což obsahuje narativ a poskytuje hlubší vhled do myšlení protagonisty.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the role of intertextuality and musical references in Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson. The thesis seeks to analyze the purpose of chosen songs and their influence on the novel's plot and the protagonist's development. More specifically, it will focus on the use of lyrics and musical elements which showcase different themes. The analysis clarifies how Nelson integrates music into literature to enrich the narrative and provide deeper insight into the protagonist's mindset.
