Chloe Gong's These Violent Delights Duology as a Retelling of William Shakespeare`s Romeo and Juliet

Abstract

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to discuss and analyse the analogies between the play Romeo and Juliet (1597) by William Shakespeare and its retelling These Violent Delights (2020) and Our Violent Ends (2021) by Chloe Gong. It further aims to examine the aforementioned literary works in the context of identity and the aspects that constitute it. The thesis also focuses on the author's intentions and the significance of her focus in the duology under discussion. The theoretical part provides the necessary terminology and introduction to the works of both authors. It also includes a necessary introduction to the historical context of Shanghai in the late 1920s, which serves to an analysis of its depiction in Chloe Gong's work. The practical part is divided into selected influences on identity and how they shape the characters in the books. The examination focuses on the influence of family and family background, romantic relationships and the environment and place in which one grew up. Cílem této bakalářské práce je prodiskutovat a zanalyzovat analogie mezi hrou Williama Shakespeara Romeo a Julie (1597) a jejím převyprávěním Naše zakázané vášně (2020) a Naše násilné konce (2021) od Chloe Gong. Dále si klade za cíl zmíněná literární díla rozebrat v kontextu identity a z pohledu aspektů, které ji tvoří. Práce se také soustředí na záměry autorky a význam jejího zaměření v rozebírané duologii. Teoretická část poskytuje nezbytnou terminologii a představení děl obou autorů. Obsahuje také nezbytné uvedení historického kontextu Šanghaje ke konci 20. letech 20. století, které poslouží k analýze jejího vyobrazení v díle Chloe Gong. Praktická část práce je rozdělena na vybrané vlivy na identitu a jakým způsobem formuje postavy v dílech. Prozkoumání se soustředí na ovlivnění rodiny a rodinného zázemí, romantických vztahů a prostředí a místo, ve kterém člověk vyrostl.
