Lucy Kirkwood's play The Children from an Ecocritical Perspective

Abstract

This bachelor thesis deals with the play The Children by a contemporary British author Lucy Kirkwood. It looks at the play from an ecocritical point of view and focuses on the way it reflects the environmental problems of today's world, especially regarding the issue of human responsibility for human-induced climate change. The theoretical part introduces key concepts such as the idea of Anthropocene and Capitalocene, their ethical implications and the idea of responsibility towards future generations. Furthermore, it briefly touches upon the biography of the author, her work, and the real-life inspiration behind The Children, the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima in Japan. The practical part interprets the play from the perspective of responsibility of one generation towards others. This thesis sees The Children as a commentary on the state of today's society and attempts to draw a parallel between the situation in the play and the current ecological crisis and climate change. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá hrou The Children současné britské autorky a dramatičky Lucy Kirkwoodové. Nahlíží na hru z ekokritického hlediska a zaměřuje se na způsob, jakým hra reflektuje environmentální problémy dnešního světa především s přihlédnutím k otázce lidské odpovědnosti za klimatické změny způsobené lidskou aktivitou. Teoretická část představuje klíčové pojmy, jako je myšlenka antropocénu a kapitalocénu, jejich etické důsledky a myšlenku odpovědnosti vůči budoucím generacím. Dále stručně představuje biografii autorky, její dílo a skutečnou inspiraci, která stála u zrodu divadelní hry The Children, a to jadernou katastrofu v japonské Fukušimě v roce 2011. Praktická část interpretuje hru z perspektivy odpovědnosti jedné generace vůči generacím ostatním. Tato práce vnímá hru The Children jako komentář stavu současné společnosti a pokouší se najít paralelu mezi situací ve hře a současnou ekologickou krizí a klimatickými změnami.
