The study deals with the existence of schools and the functioning of education on the Holíč andŠaštín estates in a period when they were owned by the Habsburg Imperial family, roughly fromthe 1740s. It is based on research focused on two archive collections held in the Slovak National Archives:Habsburg Family — Holíč Estate, and Habsburg Family — Šaštín Estate. The nature and contentof these sources only make it possible to reconstruct some elements of the functioning of thelocal education, in regard of the attitude of the seigneurial administration towards schooling, thesocial status of teachers, and the state of repair of the school buildings. Therefore, the study specificallyexamines the working conditions in which schools and educators found themselves in the periodunder review.
